RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK

A MEDJUGORJE CONNECTION

Was it just coincidence that when the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark was first released almost 37 years ago on June 12, 1981, just twelve days later the Blessed Virgin Mary, Ark of the New Covenant, presented herself to the world, appearing to six children for the first time at Medjugorje?

Next month the parish of Medjugorje and millions of believers around the world will celebrate the 37th anniversary of the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary which began on June 24, 1981 and have continued every day since.

One of the highest grossing films ever made, Raiders of the Lost Ark pits the character Indiana Jones against a group of men seeking to find and possess the Ark of the Covenant to use its supernatural power for their evil purpose in conquering the world – God’s word corrupted and the holy vessel contaminated by sin – as the serpent did with Eve in the Garden of Eden.

The Ark of the Covenant (also known also as the Ark of Testimony), contained the tablets of stone given by God to Moses, inscribed with the Ten Commandments – the essence of the Old Law – for the sons of Israel. The Blessed Virgin Mary contained the essence of the New Law. “She became a divine “container” – or bearer of God – at the Annunciation” explains Br André Marie at the website Catholicism.org

So when she first appeared at Medjugorje was Mary telling us that she, the Ark of the New Covenant, would never be lost or hidden from view, that she truly is present with us for all time, and not buried underground or inaccessible, as presented by the fictitious adventure film?

And was it also coincidence that Our Lady choose to first appear at Medjugorje on June 24, feast of the Birth of John the Baptist, precursor of the Lamb of God, the Word whose bearer was Mary, Ark of the New Covenant?

In truth we are all invited to become the bearer of the Word, for Jesus to become incarnate in every living person, for each of us to become an Ark of the New Covenant. Our Lady frequently extends this invitation in her messages.
