He does not treat us according to our sin

nor repay us according to our faults.

The Lord is compassion and love.

Parachute-Gospa.jpg

March 07, 2026

A leap of faith

Faith is like jumping with a parachute from a plane. When you jump, you see only the ground and yourself facing destruction, hurling towards it. I’s a jump into nothingness, into death. But after this dreadful experience, another incredible experience comes: if you draw the grip of the parachute, a cord opens which keeps you attached to a issue. You leave the safety of the plane, and what stops you hurling towards the ground and death? The solidity of a piece of tissue – the parachute. This small piece of silk preserves you from death; it gives you the courage to leave the safety of the plane. This is faith.

When you start to entrust yourself to somebody, you have the feeling of jumping into emptiness. Fear seizes you, and you have the impression that you are heading towards nothingness. But it enough to light in oneself the certainty that it will go well – and fear is removed.

We do not put our faith in a tissue, not in a cord, but in the Mother who walked the same ways that we walk, who lived the same anguishes, apprehensions and sufferings which we live. This is why she is our certainty, and she is promising never to deceive us. She can never deceive.

A sign in the window

On the east and west walls of St James church in Medjugorje are 28 stained-glass windows that were designed by Branimir Dorotic and installed in 1987.

Looking to the altar from the main doorway, the 14 windows on the right show events from Mary’s life, and the 14 on the left illustrate her role in the Church. The above photograph is detail of a window depicting the time when the letters M-I-R appeared across the Medjugorje skyline. MIR is the Croat word for PEACE.

Fr Jozo Zovko, pastor of Medjugorje at the time, was one of many hundred to witness this happening in the early days of the apparitions. He described the scene as: “I saw with my own eyes light coming from the Cross on Krizevac and going to the church. Then it formed the word MIR in the sky!”

Happy anniversary, Michelangelo!

Today is the 550th anniversary of the birth of Michelangelo. At a press conference on Wednesday, an independent researcher, Valentina Salerno, determined that a marble bust of Christ the Saviour displayed in Rome’s Basilica of St Agnes Outside the Walls was sculpted by the hand of the Renaissance genius Michelangelo Buonarroti.

TV2000, an Italy-based broadcasting network that carries Catholic-themed programming, has published a video on YouTube covering the press conference and an interview with Valentina Salerno.

Several other media outlets have covered the story.

Gospa Maika Moja

In her wonderful book about the early days of the Medjugorje phenomenon, Mirjana Stanislava-Casilj-Zuccarini reveals in Our Lady’s Call from Medjugorje, how the anthem Gospa Majka Moja came to be written.

• “In the early days of the apparitions five young student from Austria arrived in Medjugorje. They were offered lodgings in my cousin Miljenko’s house and they made friends with his five children, as well as with their neighbours Jelena and Marijana Vasilj (the locutionists). One of them was a medical student, Janez Miki, a Slovenian by origin, and he managed to communicate with the locals in Slovenian.

“On the sixth day of their stay, two of them went to Mostar and the other three went to Kizevac with the Vasilj children. On coming from the hill the police stopped them and asked them for tax receipts for their board and lodgings (This was customary at the time of the Communists). They admitted they did not have any, and because they refused to say with whom they were staying, the police took them to Citluk police station.

“The police station was disorderly and noisy; the TV was on all blast; several telephones were ringing simultaneously, and the room was full of cigarette smoke. Janez did not let the police know that he spoke Slovenian and that he understood what they were saying. The three young men were aware that the authorities were alway aware and suspicious, eager to catch anyone organising any form of revolution. In spite of the rather serious situation in which they found themselves, all three of them felt no worry. Instead, they felt safe and protected.

“The police ordered them to leave Yugoslavia within the next 24 hours and they were forbidden to enter the country for at least three years. Jelena, Marijana and the other children prayed for them all the time they were being questioned in Citluk.

“When Janez got back to Vienna, he testified that he had experienced a re-birth of his old true faith at Medjugorje through reciting the rosary and through fasting. He was sad because he could not return to that blessed land and, inspired, he wrote the song: Dear Lady, My Mother, Queen of Peace.”

Adapted from the book Our Lady’s call from Medjugorje, by Mirjana Stanislava Vaslji-Zuccarini.

Monies raised from the sale of this book are donated to the Mother Village in Medjugorje.

There’s a place...

The purpose of prayer and fasting is to find a place inside where man can be alone with God. In this place anxious worries disappear. When I come to peace, to God in my own heart, then I do not have to worry about whether I will fulfil the demands of others. People with their expectations and judgements do not have access to this place in which God resides in us. God is the true liberation of man’s worries. Let the words of Our Lady’s message even today lead us to experience peace and union with God.

Fr Ljubo Kurtovic OFM, May 2006

There, there’s a place where I can go

When I feel low, when I feel blue

And it’s my mind and there’s no time

When I’m alone

Cleanse me from my sins

Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness, in your great tenderness wipe away my faults; wash me clean of my guilt, purify me from my sin. Psalm 51:1‑2

• On two walls inside St James’ church are walnut carvings of the Way of the Cross, made by the Italian artist Pino Sacchi (1925-2022). He was 85 years old when he made the carvings and expressed a desire that they would be his last artistic work. The Stations were commissioned by the Heger family of Switzerland who presented them as a gift to the Medjugorje parish.

In the first Station (Jesus is Condemned to Death) the hands of Pilate is a significant key that can unlock much meaning in the rest of the set of stations. Hands are expressive of the heart. They can be open or closed. They can give and receive. They can hold or let go. They perform actions prompted by our heart and our needs.

Continuing along the Way that depicts the passion and death of Jesus, we can observe how people’s hands – their hearts – are engaged in a personal way, and particularly those of Jesus who never lets go of the cross, even when he falls.

Poor Pilate knew that Jesus was innocent of the charges brought against him, but became fearful of the crowd demanding crucifixion – a Roman execution. The Jewish custom was by stoning. By washing his hands Pilate demonstrated a desire to cleanse his heart and be free from sin: “I am innocent of this man’s blood. It is your concern,” he said. Notice, too, the servant’s offertory gesture as he presents the cleansing water to Pilate. And then Jesus is taken away to be crucified.

These actions are echoed in the liturgy of the Mass when the altar server pours water over the priest’s hands, who then takes the towel to dry his fingers and says: “Lord, wash away my iniquity; cleanse me from my sin.” This is in preparation for Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross made present in the celebration of the Eucharist.

• St Cyril of Jerusalem wrote in the fourth century: “This action shows that we must be free from all sin. We perform actions with our hands; to wash our hands is the nearest thing to purifying our deeds.”

Turbulent times

In these turbulent times and upheaval in the world, it should be remembered that Our Lady constantly reminds us that this is “a time of grace”.

Many years ago, back in 1998, the Medjugorje seer Mirjana had this to say:

“I can tell you this, that Our Lady’s heart will conquer. I want to tell you that I have heard about lots of different apparitions, some here in America, where reportedly Our Lady is talking about some horrible times to come where there is going to be floods and all kinds of disasters. And I say, with a full heart, that’s not truly Our Lady speaking because Our Lady is our mother and she loves her children, and it is not her desire that people love her because they fear. That is not true faith. She changes us with her smile and with love. And so we don’t need to fear anything, but we need to place our lives in her hands and we must not think about what will happen tomorrow. Our Lady desires that we think about what is going to happen now, in this moment, because who amongst us here can say in ten minutes we will still be alive. Our Lady desires that every second of our lives we’re prepared. to return to God.”

Medjugorje: between the two mountains

I raised my eyes, and this is what I saw: four chariots coming out between the two mountains, and the mountains were mountains of bronze. The first chariot has red horses, the second chariot had black horses, the third chariot had white horses and the fourth chariot had (vigorous) piebald horses.

I asked the angel who was talking to me, I said, “What is the meaning of these, my lord?” The angel answered, “These are going out to the four winds of heaven after standing before the Lord of the whole world. The red horses are going out to the country of the East; the black horses are going out to the country of the North; the white are going out to the country of the West and the piebald are going out to the country of the South.”

They came out vigorously , eager to patrol the world. He said to them, “Go and patrol the world.” And they patrolled the world.

He called me and said to me, “See, those going northward will make the Spirit of the Lord descend on the country of the North. And those who are far away will come and rebuild the sanctuary of the Lord. (And you will learn that the Lord Sabaoth has sent me to you.) (This will happen if you listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God.)

• The above passage from Zechariah, 6 : 1-13, (a prophet of Messianic salvation) is reminiscent of the pilgrims who come from the four corners of the world to Medjugorje, returning home with the Spirit of the Lord in their hearts.

The name Medjugorje is translated as “place between two mountains”.

And the mountains of bronze? What else but a reminder of the bronze stations erected on the Hill of Apparitions and Mt Krizevac, where pilgrims stand with an open heart “before the Lord of the whole world”.

The chariots and their horses of different colours: simply the many nationalities riding out with the message of Medjugorje, proclaiming the Gospel with their lives.

His face shone like the sun

• At that time: Jesus took with him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. Matthew 17 : 1-2

• Dear children! At this time when you are thinking of physical rest, I call you to conversion. Serving the people

What could be more unspiritual than your slogans, “I am for Paul” and “I am for Apollos”?

“After all, what is Apollos and what is Paul? They are servants who brought the faith to you. Even the different ways in which they brought it was assigned to them by the Lord. I did the planting, Apollos did the watering, but God  made things grow. Neither the planter nor the waterer matters: only God, who makes things grow. It is all one who does the planting and who does the watering, and each will be duly paid according to his share of the work. We are fellow workers with God; you are God’s farm, God’s building.”

Be off, Satan!

• Taking Jesus to a very high mountain, the devil showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour. ‘I will give you all these’ he said, ‘if you fall at my feet and worship me.’ Then Jesus replied, ‘Be off, Satan! For scripture says: You must worship the Lord your God, and serve him alone.’ Then the devil left him, and angels appeared and looked after him.

Nature is awakening

• Happy the man who has placed his trust in the Lord. He is like a tree that is planted beside the flowing waters that yields its fruit in due season and whose leaves shall never fade; and all that he does shall prosper.

Psalm 39 : 5; 1 : 3.

• Dear children! Nature is awakening and on the trees the first buds are seen which will bring most beautiful flowers and fruit. I desire that you also, little children, work on your conversion and that you be those who witness with their life, so that your example may be a sign and an incentive for conversion to others. I am with you and before my Son Jesus I intercede for your conversion. Thank you for having responded to my call.

Ash Wednesday

• “There are three things by which both faith stands firm, devotion remains constant, and virtue endures. They are prayer, fasting and mercy. Prayer knocks at the door, fasting obtains, mercy receives. Prayer, mercy and fasting: these three are one, and they give life to each other.

“Fasting is the soul of prayer, mercy is the lifeblood of fasting. Let no one try to separate them; they cannot be separated. If you have only one of them or not all together, you have nothing. So if you pray, fast; if you fast, show mercy; if you want your petition to be heard, hear the petition of others.

“When you fast, see the fasting of others. If you want God to know that you are hungry, know that another is hungry.”

Providence provides

The disciples had forgotten to take any food and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. Then he gave them this warning, ‘Keep your eyes open; be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.’ And they said to one another, ‘It is because we have no bread.’ Jesus said to them, “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you not yet understand? Have you no perception? Are your minds closed? Have you eyes that do not see, ears that do not hear? Or do you not remember? When I broke the five loaves among the five thousand, how many baskets full of scraps did you collect?” They answered, “Twelve.” “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets full of scraps did you collect?” And they answered, “Seven.” Then he said to them, “Are you still without perception?”

A sign of God’s Love

The Pharisees came up and started a discussion with Jesus; they demanded of him a sign from heaven, to test him. And with a sigh that came straight from the heart he said, “Why does this generation demand a sign? I tell you solemnly, no sign shall be given to this generation.” And leaving them again and re-embarking, he went away to the opposite shore.

Mark 8 : 11-13

• Dear children! Today, again, I invite you to pray, so that through prayer, fasting and small sacrifices you may prepare yourselves for the coming of Jesus. May this time, little children, be a time of grace for you. Use every moment and do good, for only in this way will you feel the birth of Jesus in your hearts. If with your life you give an example and become a sign of God's love, joy will prevail in the hearts of men. Thank you for having responded to my call.

A new freedom of heart and mind

• “Mary calls upon us to pray and to fast. By prayer we attach ourselves to God and by fasting we detach our heart from the good things that tie us to the affairs of this world. Fasting will lead us to a new freedom of heart and mind.

“Fasting is a call for conversion directed to our body. In a word, it is the process by which we become free from and independent of all material things. And as we free ourselves from the things outside of ourselves, we also free ourselves from the passions within us that are keeping our interior life in chains.

“This new freedom will make room in our body for new values. Therefore, fasting liberates us from a certain bondage and sets us free to enjoy happiness.”

Fr Slavko Barbarić OFM

• A response by Our Lady to a question on fasting:

The best fast is on bread and water. Through fasting and prayer, one can stop wars, one can suspend the laws of nature. Wednesday, July 21, 1982

Healing of the deaf man

• They brought him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they asked him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, put his fingers into the man’s ears and touched his tongue with spittle. Then looking up to heaven he sighed; and he said to him, ‘Ephphatha’, that is, ‘Be opened.’ And his ears were opened, and the ligament of his tongue was loosened and he spoke clearly.

Unbind him, let him go free!

I’m now of an age where I’ve started downsizing and disposing of bits and pieces kept for many years. More recently I came across a folder of testimonies people sent to me over time for publication in a monthly Medjugorje newsletter I used to produce and post out. The length of some of the testimonies prevented their publication as the newsletter was restricted to 16 pages. The first newsletter – a two-page effort – was distributed in June 2002. The final issue was produced 14 years later in October 2016.

Over the years I’ve been amazed how the newsletter to promote Our Lady’s messages reached so many far-off places. One such destination was a maximum security prison in Zambia. This prompted a response from one of the prisoners which can be read at this link.

House dogs

Jesus left Gennesaret and set out for the territory of Tyre. There he went into a house and did not want anyone to know he was there, but he could not pass unrecognised. A woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard about him straightaway and came and fell at his feet. Now the woman was a pagan, by birth a Syrophoenician, and she begged him to cast the devil out of her daughter. And he said to her, “The children should be fed first, because it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the house-dogs.” But she spoke up: “Ah yes, sir,” she replied “but the house-dogs under the table can eat the children’s scraps.” And he said to her, “For saying this, you may go home happy: the devil has gone out of your daughter.” So she went off to her home and found the child lying on the bed and the devil gone.

Can men grow beards in heaven?

The question is reminiscent of a line by the Canadian band, Crash Test Dummies, in the song God Shuffled His Feet: “Do you have to get your hair cut in Heaven?”

Occasionally I ponder on this question as most images of Jesus as an adult portray him with a beard so, presumably, at the Resurrection he still had his beard.

The Turin Shroud, claimed by many to be the cloth in which Jesus was buried, shows the face of a bearded man.

In his prophecy about the passion of Christ, Isaiah pronounced: I offered my back to those who struck me, my cheeks to those who tore at my beard. (50 : 6)

When we recite the Creed we say we believe in a bodily resurrection: “I believe in the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting”. So evidently there is a physical dimension to everlasting life.

The apparitions of the Virgin Mary at Medjugorje, witnessed by six people would also seem to confirm this as fact. Ivanka Dragicevic-Elez, the first of the visionaries to see Our Lady at Medjugorje, claims she was also blessed to see her own mother in a physical state on occasions following her death in 1981.

In a week’s time the Church celebrates the Feast of the Holy Face of Jesus (Shrove Tuesday) first declared by Pope Pius XII in 1958.

It’s at this point I make the connection to the headline for this post and mention of an earlier story I published here in April 2025, when I revealed that my own mother had been blessed with an apparition of the face of Jesus appearing on a wall in the Church of Christ the King in Gortahork, Co Donegal.

I won’t share all the details except to say that the face was smiling and beardless!

The power of prayer

Dear children! Today again I am calling you to prayer to complete surrender to God. You know that I love you and am coming here out of love so I could show you the path to peace and salvation for your souls. I want you to obey me and not permit Satan to seduce you. Dear children, Satan is very strong and, therefore, I ask you to dedicate your prayers to me so that those who are under his influence can be saved. Give witness by your life. Sacrifice your lives for the salvation of the world. I am with you, and I am grateful to you, but in heaven you shall receive the Father's reward which He has promised to you. Therefore, dear children, do not be afraid. If you pray, Satan cannot injure you even a little bit because you are God’s children and He is watching over you. Pray and let the rosary always be in your hand as a sign to Satan that you belong to me. Thank you for having responded to my call.

The storm before the calm at Medjugorje

A week ago last Saturday the gospel reading for the day was about Jesus calming the storm when he and his disciples were in a boat making their way across the Sea of Galilee.

The story reminded me of a similar incident experienced by a pilgrim making his first visit to Medjugorje.

It’s well known that those who decide to visit Medjugorje for the first time, and sometimes when even making a return visit, are often plagued by obstacles to prevent them travelling to the shrine of the Queen of Peace. Sickness, money problems, family or working difficulties are just some of many issues that crop up to deter the pilgrim from travelling. But none can be more unusual or fearful as the experience of John and Anita Rowland when they decided to embark on a pilgrimage to Medjugorje back in 1988.

John’s account can be read at THIS LINK.

A bird in the hand...

Jesus said to his disciples: “Look at the birds in the sky. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns; yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you worth much more than they are?

Matthew 6 : 26

• The image above shows detail from the Mysteries of Light station at Medjugorje depicting the Transfiguration.

Take a closer look at the shape of the hand. You may even see the outline of a bird nestling in the palm of Jesus, its head and beak pointing to his wrist. The forefinger is the bird’s tail and the three other fingers represent one of its wings.

But when the image is rotated 90 degrees the hand forms the shape of another bird, the thumb its neck and head, the four fingers a feathered wing, symbolising the Holy Spirit as a dove.

All who touched him were cured

Having made the crossing, Jesus and his disciples came to land at Gennesaret and tied up. No sooner had they stepped out of the boat than people recognised him, and started hurrying all through the countryside and brought the sick on stretchers to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went, to village, or town, or farm, they laid down the sick in the open spaces, begging him to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak. And all those who touched him were cured. Mark 6 : 53-56

• Where does Jesus send us? There are no borders, no limits: he sends us to everyone. The Gospel is for everyone, not just for some. It is not only for those who seem closer to us, more receptive, more welcoming. It is for everyone. Do not be afraid to go and to bring Christ into every area of life, to the fringes of society, even to those who seem farthest away, most indifferent. The Lord seeks all, he wants everyone to feel the warmth of his mercy and his love.

Pope Francis, July 28, 2013

• Dear children! Also today, I call you to prayer. Little children, prayer works miracles. When you are tired and sick and you do not know the meaning of your life, take the Rosary and pray; pray until prayer becomes for you a joyful meeting with your Saviour. I am with you, little children, and I intercede and pray for you. Thank you for having responded to my call.

Your light must shine in the sight of men

• You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5 : 14-16

From every nation under heaven

How does it happen that each of us hears these men speaking in his own language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; people from Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya around Cyrene, as well as visitors from Rome – Jews and proselytes alike – Cretans and Arabs; we hear them preaching in our own language about the marvels of God.

A change of heart...

I shall give you a new heart, and put a new spirit in you; I shall remove the heart of stone from your bodies and give you a heart of flesh instead.

Ezekiel 36 : 26

Dear children! Today I thank you for all the sacrifices you have offered me these days. Little children, I invite you to open yourselves to me and to decide for conversion. Your hearts, little children, are still not completely open to me and therefore, I invite you again to open to prayer so that in prayer the Holy Spirit will help you, that your hearts become of flesh and not of stone. Little children, thank you for having responded to my call and for having decided to walk with me toward holiness.

Two by two...

Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs giving them authority over unclean spirits. And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff – no bread, no haversack, no coppers for their purses. They were to wear sandals but, he added, “Do not take a spare tunic.”

Mark 6 : 7-9

• Dear children! In your life you have all experienced light and darkness. God grants to every person to recognise good and evil. I am calling you to the light which you should carry to all the people who are in darkness. People who are in darkness daily come into your homes. Dear children, give them the light! Thank you for having responded to my call.

The sabbath

In Sacred Scripture, the faithful find a “privileged space for encounter where God continues to speak to the men and women of every time, so that, by listening, they can know Him and love Him.”

Pope Leo XIV, February 4, 2026

• Dear children! Today again I call you to become carriers of my peace. In a special way, now when it is being said that God is far away, He has truly never been nearer to you. I call you to renew prayer in your families by reading the Sacred Scripture and to experience joy in meeting with God who infinitely loves His creatures. Thank you for having responded to my call.
